Cityoga’s comprehensive 85-hour training draws on Kelly and Lisa’s 35+ years of combined experience of teaching prenatal yoga, birthing children, and assisting other births, bringing you the best best practices in terms of safety, sequencing and teaching techniques. This training will give you the confidence to absorb and embody the specialized knowledge of appropriate asanas and other yogic practices for safely teaching yoga throughout all stages of pregnancy.
This is Indiana’s only school to offer a 85hr Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training (RPYT). Deepen your knowledge and grow your passion for supporting health and transformation during pregnancy with Kelly Shull and Lisa Daugherty. In one of the few Registered Prenatal Yoga Schools, Cityoga’s 85-hour Prenatal Yoga Teacher training will teach you how to confidently lead a holistic and supportive prenatal yoga class that gives a connection with breath and inner strength, as well as, develop the physical strength and endurance to support the birthing process. Cityoga’s RPYT will provide the skills, techniques and credentials needed to specialize in this growing and popular area and modality of yoga teaching. Learning to teach Prenatal Yoga is a wonderful way to diversify your skill set and what you are able to offer to the community. Designed for those who are interested in acquiring the tools necessary to assist others in order to enhance and empower their experience during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum. Full of practical, philosophical, mythical, archetypal knowledge, wisdom and stories, this training will assist you to better serve the pregnant people in our yoga communities.
Topics to be covered:
- Anatomy and physiology of the pregnant person and baby throughout the three trimesters of pregnancy
- Mental, emotional, spiritual changes, gifts and challenges a pregnant person might experience
- Labor and delivery: different stages of labor and birth and how to prepare for an empowered birth experience
- Safety guidelines and contraindicated poses and practices
- Prenatal yoga postures, alignment and sequencing for each trimester
- The fourth trimester
- Adjustments and modifications with props
- Learning how to provide a safe space and create community in a yoga class
- Yoga for common pregnancy complaints
- Pelvic floor health and stability
- Language and cultural awareness
- Working with props to modify and adapt to the different stages of pregnancy
- Prenatal restorative yoga, including a variety of stress relieving techniques
- Meditations, visualizations and affirmations
- Pranayama for pregnancy and childbirth
- Prenatal partner yoga
- Singing and ceremony to honor the sacred body and experience of fertility
- Ethics of teaching Prenatal Yoga
By the end of this training, you will have developed an instructional foundation of skills in prenatal yoga that will allow you to add a new and vibrant dimension to your yoga instruction and/or in your career as a birth worker or childbirth educator.
CITYOGA is a Registered Prenatal Yoga School (RYPS) through Yoga Alliance. Graduates will be eligible to receive the Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT) certification upon completion.
*Required reading will be provided once registered for training
*For those who are pursuing Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RYPT) Certification, you must have successfully completed at least a 200-hour yoga teacher training program . A certification of completion will be provided.
Standards of Curriculum and CITYOGA’s 85-hour Certification Requirement include:
- 200-hour yoga teacher training program (RYT-200)
- 64 hours of Prenatal Education and Training in the studio (4-weekend modules)
- 10 hours of Prenatal Yoga Class Observation
- 10 hours Student Teaching Practicum
- 10 hours of homework with required reading. *Required reading will be provided once registered for training

Module 1: Foundations of Prenatal Yoga and Birth
In this module you will start to explore the changes of the pregnant body during each trimester with an overview of the pelvic floor muscles and how the body changes in pregnancy and postpartum (the fourth trimester). You will gain a solid foundation of physiology and anatomy and break down the poses and alignment which can be most beneficial, as well as which poses to avoid, for the pregnant and postpartum students. Module one will also examine and discuss a brief history of pregnancy and current birth culture in the US. We will have experiential practice with movement and asana and also take time to dive into our required and recommended reading. Cityoga Certification and Yoga Alliance requirements will be discussed, as well as required class observation hours.

Module 2: Teaching Methodology - Asana, Alignment, Sequencing, and Props
During this module, you will learn how to structure your class by learning which asanas and pranayama are most beneficial in each trimester. The pregnant body changes so much throughout pregnancy and learning proper alignment with the support of props for common discomforts, ailments, and complications. We will take a deep dive into the birth journey and the holistic stages of birth so that you may prepare your students for postures that can help during different stages of labor. This module will be a deep dive into posture and sequencing and theming that will help you to create a knowledgeable and safe flow for your students. You will learn about how to create a safe and inclusive space for ALL students and explore gendered language in birth. You will also begin to teach in groups in a fun and friendly environment in order to gain confidence and get more comfortable with the prenatal language and begin to find your own style of prenatal yoga teaching. We will also explore the history and ceremony of singing to honor the sacred body.

Module 3: Relaxation, Meditations, Visualizations, Affirmations, Pranayama and Mudras
This module will explore different relaxation techniques that can help a pregnant person not only during the birthing process but throughout their entire pregnancy. We will begin to look more closely at birthing, labor and delivery, and interventions with solid childbirth education from a holistic perspective as well as from the medical model of birth. We will take a deeper look into meditations, visualizations, affirmation and pranayama that are essential tools and can enhance your students' yoga practice and birthing process. We will learn about various birth goddesses and archetypes. This module you will get a chance to give a short presentation on a subject or interest of your choice related to childbirth and prenatal yoga.

Module 4: Bringing It All Together, Teachback Practicum and Supporting Your Community
We will be examining postpartum care (the fourth trimester) as an essential part of having a positive birth experience and is often overlooked. We will learn ways to provide support to fully meet the needs of your postpartum students, from teaching baby massage to understanding PMAD (perinatal mood and anxiety disorder). You will be provided with local community resources to share with your students. We will discuss the business of teaching Prenatal Yoga and set goals of how we want to contribute to our community and share a self reflection of our experience and what we have learned. You will also teach a short prenatal yoga class for your teaching practicum that will allow for practice and supportive feedback in a nurturing setting so you feel ready and prepared to go out and teach your own class. There will also be a closing ceremony and graduation celebrating all of the sacred knowledge shared and community and friendships that were formed over the course of the teacher training.
